The beginning of a new year is a great time to reflect on the improvement in life that you want to make for the next year. It is also the best timing for you to commit yourself to remove the stress in the past year by handling your IRS tax problems.
Resolving your tax problems sooner than later will always pay off; the longer you wait, the greater the interest and penalties you will have to pay. Some people who owe money to the IRS think that they may never be contacted at all since they haven’t done so yet. This is of course highly unlikely. Though it works very slowly, the IRS is a very efficient collection machine.
Before resolving your tax problems, you need to sit down and think of a plan of attack. There are several things to think of to deal with the IRS. Figure out your own IRS situation first which is directly affected by your financial situation. Your situation is considered not too difficult if you can afford to pay the tax back, even when you have to pay it in instalments. A difficult situation is then when paying the tax will cause you financial adversity.
If Your Financial Situation Is Not Too Difficult
With a tax debt less than $25,000 you will be able to pay it off completely in monthly payments over a period of less than 3 years. If you think your financial situation allows you to do this, all you need to do is contact the IRS and setup an instalment agreement with them. You will be able to repay your tax debt over a maximum of 3 years in instalments. If due to your financial situation it is impossible to pay your tax debt in 3 years, you will have to choose the next option below.
If Your Financial Situation Is Too Difficult
If you think that paying your tax debt would cause you financial hardship, it is best that you contact a tax relief professional. Using tax relief professionals will help you analyze your financial situation and even get you a settlement with the IRS where a great deal of your tax debt may be erased. You could pay only a fraction of what you actually owe. The IRS provides over 20 different types of tax settlements from which your tax relief professional could choose for your specific financial situation.
Your 2009 resolution should be figuring out what your financial situation is to be able to take the correct and necessary actions to improve your finances. Tax relief professionals are there to help you resolve your difficult situation with your tax debt.

My parents are very busy finding their papers so they can pay for their tax… I agree with what you said, the longer you wait, the greater interest and penalties you have to pay.. So better to do it after celebrating New Year..

I think this is a very helpful article for those with tax problems. The worst thing a person could do is to do nothing. The IRS isn’t going away.

Good advice. I always knew that its best to contact the tax people as soon as you can they prefer it and the more you drag it the worse it gets but didn’t know that a tax relief professional can actually help erases some tax debt.
