If you are thinking of applying for a college scholarship, you will be asked for several letters of recommendation. Providing as much valuable information as you can about yourself is the quickest way for your application to land in the approval pile. These letters of recommendation is so important that leaving this until the last minute is the worst thing that you can do. You need to be considerate when you ask people to complete these letters. Give them time to fit it into their schedule. This is one of the reasons why you should never wait until the last minute to get your hands on these letters or recommendation.
Before you start working on your letter of recommendation, make sure that you ask the right people to complete them for you. Most college scholarship applications would ask for 3 letters from you but just in case you need a little bit more, it is a good idea to ask at least 5 people to complete these letters for you.
Take the time to think who of the people that know you would provide a great insight to your character. This could be your boss, friend, Church-member, or teacher. Try hard to get letters from people that you have different relationships with. Your letters of recommendation will be more powerful if you can have them from different angles than all from the people you work with, for example.
Most people will be happy to complete a letter of recommendation for you if you express openly why you need one, especially if it is a way to assist you to get your college scholarship applications approved. Openly express to them that you need them to cover particular aspects of their relationship to you from the beginning, if you need.
Before you go around asking people for letters of recommendation, you should carefully think of the right people that could give a great insight of your personality and character. Write a list of the people that you think can provide you with these insights, and write down whatever it is that you need them to cover for you. Discuss with them the deadline for them to complete the letters but do not forget to be considerate and let them fit this into their schedule. To make sure that you have your letters ready by the deadline, offer to pick up the letter of recommendation yourself.
Maker sure that the people that you are asking to complete these letters for you are writing these important points:
1.) How long have they known you?
2.) What is the relationship they have with you?
3.) Why do they think you deserve a college scholarship?
4.) A closing with their full name, contact information and signed.
The standard quality of letters of recommendation is it has to be typed. If somebody writing the letter for you can not type it, offer to do it for them from the one they write by hand. After you have done this, do not forget to ask for their signature on the typed letter of recommendation.
When all the letters of recommendation are in your hands, make sure that you take the time to read them. Do not let any typing mistakes or grammar mistakes in them. If you find any, ask the writer to update the letters. People realize the value of these letters for you to get money for your education, so they will not mind editing and updating them.
When all the letters of recommendation are error free and ready to be sent, make a lot of copies of each letter and keep them in a safe place. It will be very annoying for the creator of those letters if you have to ask them to make another one for you because you lost the original. Also show them a nice gesture to let them know how much you appreciate the time they took to write the letters of recommendation for you.
