From the 9-10 December, I went to a church conference in Jakarta which was called the “Conference of the Holy of Hollies”. One of the most important thing that George Annadorai, one of the speakers in the conference, taught us was the connection between debt and destiny. As we all know, in the Bible God calls us, believers, as His children or sons. We know that the first important Son is Jesus Christ. Israel as a nation is also called as His son.
Exodus 4:22
Then you are to tell Pharaoh, “Adonai says, ‘Israel is my firstborn son. I have told you to let my son go in order to worship me, but you have refused to let him go. Well then, I will kill your firstborn son!’ “
When God said that ‘Israel is My firstborn son’. It means that He has other sons after Israel. His other sons are all other nations who believe in the God of Abraham. Israel is just the firstborn. We know also that individual believers are also called His sons or children.
The Father’s desire for His children is for the them to fulfill their destiny and become an heir of God’s promises, blessings and their destiny for a purposeful life, here on earth as well as in our eternal life. Read Galatians 4:6.
Now because you are sons, God has sent forth into our hearts the Spirit of His Son, the Spirit who cries out, “Abba!” So through God you are no longer a slave but a son, and if you are a son you are also an heir.
In the lives of His children, in this broken world, Satan would do anything to prevent us, God’s children, to fulfill our destiny and receive the inheritance that God has prepared for us. The obstacles that Satan continues to send our way to block us and make us stumble are demonic possessions, diseases and destructive habits.
It is obvious that all the above are great obstacles that hinders us to reach our destiny that our Father has set for our lives. Only the sacrifice of the Holy Lamb on the cross can get rid of all those three. That is why it is important to believe and to have ministries in our churches to cast out demons and break the curses associated to those demons, the ministry of healing the sick and the breaking of destructive habits. Getting rid of all these three will set you free from the bondage so you can are able to reach what God would want you to have.
Whatever habit we have that cuts our life short is the perfect tool for Satan to prevent us to reach our destiny. He makes sure that our destructive habits would kill us before we step into our destiny to fulfill our mission on earth. All kinds of addictions and Demons in us and illnesses can also be used as a lethal weapon by Satan. These three are the most common and the most effective ways to jeopardize your destiny.
But the least talked about obstacle that Satan uses to prevent God’s children from becoming heirs of His promises, blessings and destiny is debt. We all are taught that the Bible is against the practice of borrowing money. But we were never really taught why. Read Proverbs 22:7.
The rich rule the poor and the borrower is slave to the lender.
When a child of God borrows money, he becomes a slave to the lender and no longer is his status an heir. Slaves do not have destinies. Slaves do not inherit anything. Slaves are never heirs with any children of any household they serve in. One of Satan’s way to block a child of God from reaching their destiny is to get them into debt.
When the Bible tells us not to borrow money, it is not merely about the money or about not trusting God that He can provide for us. It is putting our destiny at stake. By borrowing money, we give up our status as ‘child of God’ and we become a ’slave’ of the lender. A slave does not have a destiny and does not inherit anything. Putting you into slavery is Satan’s way to prevent you from becoming what God wants you to become.
When Jesus died on the cross, His last word was, “Testelestai.” Litterally it means, “It is paid for.”
There is a history behind the word ‘testelestai’. In the ancient world, and it does still happen now in some places, people who lend money to other people would put a sign on the door of their borrowers that says, “This man owes me money,” especially if the borrower has not paid his debt for a long time past the deadline. This will humiliate the borrower and forces him to pay off their debt as soon as possible to be able to remove the sign from their door. The sign also prevents the borrower from doing any businesses with anybody else because nobody would want to do business with somebody who is actually in debt and hasn’t paid for it.
When the borrower finally pays of the debt, he removes the sign on the door and replaces it with a one word sign, “Testelestai” – it is paid for. Jesus’ death on the cross is a payment of our debt as slaves of Satan and slaves of our own sins, and when He died, the debt was paid for, ‘testelestai’.
Of course Satan doesn’t give up that easily. Even after the debt of God’s children was paid for 2000 years ago, he still goes around trying to drag them back into slavery and thus cancelling all prophecies, promises and destiny that God has prepared for His children. Being in debt is moving back into slavery after our status has been reinstated as ‘child’ at the cross. This is one effective way to jeopardize your destiny.
