There are so many varied reasons why people are in debt. People who are in debt usually feels that things seem comfortable and affordable in the beginning, until the realization suddenly hits them and the payments that they were making so comfortably before are now like a huge mountain that they need to cover. The bills seem to be increasing endlessly and the credit card statements start to drive them mad and they just can’t see the end of the tunnel. This is where many debt consolidation companies come in and offer you debt negotiation help. At least that’s what they tell you.
There are many reputable debt management companies who have come up with a legitimate financial product called the credit card debt consolidation. These companies have offered credit card debt consolidation programs for years and actually have provided debt relief to a lot of people. However, there are now quite a lot of companies that are really preying on those who are desperately in need of financial help. What these scammers do is take your money and pocket your money but then tell you that they are paying your creditors.
The most common place that people come to to find credit card debt consolidation services is by searching the internet. Here they find dozens of companies, all of which are claiming to be able to save thousands of dollars by eliminating unsecured debt ahead of schedule. They say that they are able to do this because of their relationship with the creditors and also their expertise in negotiating down your debt. It may seem very attractive to you especially if they claim that they are a non-profit organization.
It is true that there are excellent debt consolidation or debt management services out there, even those who are specializing in credit card debt consolidation. However, you will have to be careful and watch out for companies that will scam you. To avoid being their victim, read below to determine if they are legit or not.
- Go to the Better Business Bureu website (www.bbb.org) where you can find out a lof about a company. Read carefully about the company that are offering you debt consolidation services and take notes of any negative feedback. If you find the company is new, be aware especially if you have never heard of them or never seen any expensive ad campaign.
- Scammers will suggest that you stop paying your creditors while they are negotiating with them and instead, pay them. Always continue making payments to your creditors no matter what.
- Some companies will tell you that the debt negotiation between them and your creditors will take 6 months. The truth is, reputable companies will never prolong negotiation and therefore things like these will only take a maximum of one month!
- If they tell you that all your negative information in your credit report will be removed, stay away from them. There is no way to remove negative information from a credit report that easily. If the information has exceeded 7 years, yes, it will be removed. And also if you can prove that the information is wrong, you will be able to have the information removed from your credit report.
- If you are paying the debt management company and your creditors are contacting you for not receiving payment from you, be aware. Immediately stop paying your debt management company after you are sure that there is no agreement in place between them and your creditors.
If you really feel that it is necessary for you to use someone to help you sort out your debt make sure that they are a reputable business.

Dear Elisheva,
Thank you for taking the time to post this very important information. There are many ways in which a consolidation company can take advantage of a person that is already in fragile state. The warning signs that you offer are such a big help. For those that are not comfortable with debt consolidation there is debt settlement. A debt settlement company will negotiate your debt for less than what is owed. It’s the solution for people that are serious about getting out of debt. Thanks again.

This was a great post. Most people don’t know anything about consolidation companies until they have to deal with one, at which point they’ve got so much stress and worry that due diligence goes right out the window. Being informed about common deceptive practices is probably the best thing the average debt holder can hope to do.
